English At Large offers free one-to-one and small-group tutoring and conversation practice. All programs are free of charge and are delivered by English At Large volunteers.

One-to-one and small-group tutoring
English At Large provides free English language tutors to non-native English-speaking adults (ESOL learners). Learners must live or work within our 21-town service area. Tutoring occurs in public locations--usually a library--and is guided by learner goals. Tutors and learners negotiate meeting dates, times, and duration, usually meeting once or twice a week for a total of two to three hours per week.

Conversation Groups
Conversation Groups are groups of about 8 - 12 learners who meet on a weekly basis and practice their English speaking skills. The groups provide the perfect opportunity for learners to improve their speaking confidence and meet other people who are learning English. Topics usually covered in Conversation Groups include American culture and holidays, idioms, casual spoken English, and daily life situations (the bank, the post office, speaking with neighbors, etc.)

Basic English Class

Online Learning
Some learners are unable to attend our other programs because of hectic work schedules or childcare responsibilities. Our Online Learning program allows them to practice their English skills when they have pockets of free time during the week. Learners are able to chose online modules on topics that are of interest to them while working virtually with volunteers who provide guidance, motivation and correction.

Online learning resources
Every spring and fall, English At Large offers English conversation practice in a group setting. Conversation groups are
open to any local adult. Each group, facilitated by EMLC volunteers, meets in a local library or community center once a
week for one and a half to two hours for at least eight weeks per session. Groups are appropriate for intermediate to
advanced ESOL learners who understand at least 70% of the English they hear. Learners may register for only one conversation
group at a time.
