Volunteer Opportunities |
It's a two-way conversation. As a volunteer, you can
receive as much as you give. Learn about the need for
help in fighting low adult English literacy and the impact you can make.
Volunteer opportunities with English At Large are varied
enough to suit almost any schedule and level of
commitment.
One-to-one tutors
To be an English tutor, you don't need previous
teaching experience. You don't even need to know another
language. You need only desire, commitment, and training.
As a volunteer one-to-one tutor with English At Large, you will be:

Trained in a 15-hour workshop series to learn the essentials of a successful tutoring relationship. |

Matched with an adult learner in your area. |
| o |
Encouraged to work with your learner for 2-3 hours
per week, always in a public place--usually a library.
(You and your learner will agree on time and place.) |

Expected to make a minimum commitment of 50
contact hours with your learner (~6 months). |

Asked to make a voluntary $50 contribution to help defray training costs. |

Certified as a tutor by English At Large and ProLiteracy America. |
Other volunteer roles
English At Large needs volunteers for a variety of other activities necessary to maintain and grow the organization.
Conversation Group Facilitator: Facilitate group meetings (with the assistance of another volunteer) in which advanced ESOL learners practice English conversation. This is a weekly, 1.5 commitment for a minimum of 3 months.
Intake Assessor: Interview prospective learners and test their English level and to determine the most suitable English At Large program for their needs. This role has a flexible schedule where volunteers can do as many or as few assessments as they like per month (minimum of two per month).
Standardized Assessor: Take a formal state-certified training and administer standardize speaking or writing tests to our learners. This role has a flexible schedule where volunteers can do as many or as few assessments as they like per month, though there are many assessments that must be completed in May or June.
Basic English Instructor: Teach a group of learners the basic life skills needed to exist comfortably in the US. A 12-week curriculum is provided. This role is ideal for someone who has experience teaching ESL to low-level learners in a group setting.
Citizenship Instructor: Teach a group of learners the basics of US History and the process needed to attain citizenship. A 10-week curriculum is provided. This role is ideal for a volunteer who has experience in education, teaching from a curriculum and an interest in US History.
Online Learning Instructor: Guide a group of 10 - 20 learners through online learning modules. Provide feedback, guidance and encouragement throughout the 3-month session. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys computers and technology and can volunteer about 5 - 8 hours each week.
Office Volunteer: Complete a two-hour shift once a week--filing, copying, telephoning, mailing, organizing books, etc.
Translators/Interpreters: Be on call to translate documents and/or talk with learners.
Special Projects: Assist with the organization and execution of special events, such as our Online Auction, the Annual Celebration, or provide professional expertise for outreach initiatives.
